I recently read an article that said the half-life for learned skills is five years, that’s it…five years! Do you know what was happening when I think back to five years ago? Certainly doesn’t seem that long ago; the cronut was born, Sharknado was all the rage and it was the beginning of my addiction to Candy Crush. On a more serious note; wearable technologies were considered the next big thing, smart home technologies were just being talked about and the iPhone 5S with the first touch ID feature was released. You get the idea…it wasn’t that long ago, but then again – it was.
When I think about my job then and my job today, I can completely relate to the sentiment that our learned skills need to evolve at a more rapid pace than ever before. That’s much easier said than done though! It is often hard to step out of the office for a period of time and it can be costly to take classes, attend conferences and sign up for events. That’s why we’re hosting our first ever virtual HR & Payroll eSymposium. It’s on November 14th from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Eastern Time, giving attendees the opportunity to hear the latest trends and insights on topics like recruiting, hiring, compliance, payroll, and technology while networking with each other; all from the convenience of their home or office.
If that’s not convincing enough, here are three reasons you should sign up:
Earn recertification credits.
If you’ve put the hard work in to earn an accreditation like SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, SPHR or CPP, make sure you take time for yourself to earn your recertification credits so you can maintain those credentials. Most sessions offered during the eSymposium are recertification credit hour approved for SHRM, HRCI, and APA. If you don’t have one of these certifications and are considering it, check out this advice from the HR Bartender on various options.
Association conferences can cost upwards of $2,500 for a multi-day experience, and that’s not factoring in travel costs. Don’t get me wrong, if you have the means to be able to get out and attend conferences like SHRM Annual, APA Congress or HR Tech…definitely do it. There is very little that can replace an in-person learning environment. But the reality of it is, not everyone can do that for one reason or another. Our eSymposium is a free event to anyone that signs up and won’t break the budget.
Invest in you.
We know that HR and Payroll professionals spend their careers focused on taking care of the people side of their businesses, leaving them with little time to focus on themselves. Our organizations need you to be forward thinking, to be change agents, to push for the investments that will not only contribute to business goals but provide an exceptional experience for employees. In order to be that for your companies – you must make continuous learning a priority. Be a student of your craft and it will serve you throughout your career.
Don’t miss out – sign up and spend a day focusing on you…just like you would at the spa. Sort of the same? Okay, not the same…but still, just as important.
