Saving the System Saves Consumers Money
The U.S. healthcare system is in a state of crisis, but there is an opportunity to improve:
- The "Curing a Sick System" survey found that 85 percent of hospital healthcare executives believe consumers would benefit in terms of alleviating rising healthcare costs if hospitals could better address their controllable expenses.
- These executives identified workforce management issues, including improving labor productivity, retaining nurses, and reducing labor costs as three of the top four areas of controllable costs.
- Dr. David J. Brailer, President Bush's point person for health-information technology initiatives, predicts that technology investments could lead to $140 billion a year in cost savings by 2014, or an estimated six percent of healthcare spending in that year.
